How Music Changed My Life: Nina's Story

If it weren't for music, I would not be the person I am today. I've been involved in music since a young age, participating in orchestra and choir in school, but everyone knows that the youth of our generation struggle when it comes to accepting others for their differences, and feeling confident being themselves at times.  My first electronic music experience was Identity music festival at DTE, Summer of 2011. I had no idea what to expect going into it, but it resulted in a huge change to my life. As I looked around, I saw a very diverse collection of people. People of all different backgrounds, with different styles, of different ages... and I began to realize that these people would probably not ever come together if it were not for the music bringing them all to this venue. The music itself allowed all of these people to connect on a level so beyond any external characteristic or basic interest. I began to learn that a beat, rhythm, or melody could be the force that drives two complete strangers to let loose, accept one another, and just groove out together without any fear of rejection or misunderstanding.

It does not matter what sets you apart from a person, because the fact of it is, music makes us FEEL good, it makes us happy....and music festivals allow us to do that together, as one.  This realization had the most positive impact on my character. I began to live my life with a more optimistic outlook, that these same principles can be applied to more aspects of everyday life. I now knew that when I doubt, I could turn to the people of this music scene to gain a sense of togetherness and belonging. The people in this scene are looking to empower one another, not put each other down. Ever since Identity 2011 I've attended many shows and festivals from Coachella in Indio, California, to Electric Forest in Rothbury, Michigan... And with each new festival, I gain new friends and new uplifting experiences. The electronic music scene has opened my mind to giving everyone a standing chance to become a part of my journey of life. When I'm in the atmosphere of a music festival filled with good vibes & even better music, I feel free, and more alive than anywhere else in the world. The best feeling is being able to turn to anyone around you, share a smile, and dance with absolutely no shy feelings. I believe that through the use of involvement in music culture, the people of our world will learn to set aside differences, and come to the understanding that we are all human, and we are all beautiful. It is an incredible thing to have an entire community of individuals that you've CHOSEN to call your family. The movement lives on.
