<div style="color: #313131; font-family: 'Myriad Pro'; line-height: 33.3333358764648px; margin: 20px auto; padding: 0px;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 33.3333358764648px;">June 22, 2015, 9:02 a.m. My feet hit the concrete as I step off the Insomniac shuttle bus and the all-too familiar Las Vegas sun greets me with open arms. I turn to my friend, Jimmy who already has hands up over his eyes attempting to shield himself from the overwhelmingly bright light surrounding us. Cars are passing us left and right and there’s a soreness in my knees that slowly surfaces as we walk to our hotel room. We look at each other briefly and, without speaking, we understand we’re not in wonderland anymore.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 33.3333358764648px;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 33.3333358764648px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #313131; font-family: 'Myriad Pro'; line-height: 33.3333358764648px; margin: 20px auto; padding: 0px;">
<span style="background-color: white;">For three nights from dusk to dawn, we immersed ourselves in a world of fantasy. Alice would be floored by the spectacle and with good reason, for after its nineteenth installment, the <a href="http://www.electricdaisycarnival.com/" style="-webkit-transition: all 0.15s ease-in-out; color: #232122; letter-spacing: 0.1em; outline: none; text-decoration: none; text-transform: uppercase; transition: all 0.15s ease-in-out;">ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL</a> could easily surpass any happiness or romance found in the golden afternoon. But it goes without saying that Insomniac Events, the electronic dance music festival maker and dance music industry heavyweight, understands both production and experience as this past EDC garnered the attention of 400,000+ attendees from all around the globe, creating an experience like no other. It is North America’s largest music festival.</span></div>
<div style="color: #313131; font-family: 'Myriad Pro'; line-height: 33.3333358764648px; margin: 20px auto; padding: 0px;">
<span style="background-color: white;">This past Electric Daisy Carnival was my fourth experience, and out of all the raves, clubs, festivals and parties I’ve been to, this year’s EDC was my absolute favorite. Perhaps it was the energy I could feel from friends and strangers as we shared dances all through the night. Perhaps it was my own sense of being that felt transformed by the spiritual experiences that accompanied DJ sets. Either way, there was something electric in the air the moment I walked into that speedway.</span></div>
<div style="color: #313131; font-family: 'Myriad Pro'; line-height: 33.3333358764648px; margin: 20px auto; padding: 0px;">
<span style="background-color: white;">It was an energy that moved me to tears, not because I was sad it was over (though part of me felt nostalgic even as the sun rose behind the stages on the last day) but because each and every moment was a celebration of life that was unmatched to any celebration I’ve ever experienced before. To be faced with the harshness of reality again on that Monday morning after was to be pulled abruptly from a dream that met every one of my desires and hopes of what the world ought to look like.</span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="image" data-orig-height="2448" src="http://40.media.tumblr.com/2e412c3a63dd773d3f9b4764ff1da1e3/tumblr_inline_nqrc9ersQ01s9nfjz_1280.jpg" data-orig-width="3264" height="300" style="border: 0px; display: block; margin: 5px auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: bottom;" width="400" /></td></tr>

<div style="color: #313131; font-family: 'Myriad Pro'; line-height: 33.3333358764648px; margin: 20px auto; padding: 0px;">
<span style="background-color: white;">A few years ago, I read somewhere once that massive dance music festivals, especially the likes of EDC where P.L.U.R. (Peace, Love Unity & Respect) is consistently practiced by both festival promoter and festival participant, and where global energy can be cultivated and shared, are like massive “love-recharging stations.” You go, you have fun, and you have <i>so</i> much fun that you radiate that newfound love the remainder of the year, passing it on to anyone and everyone who needs it.</span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="image" data-orig-height="2059" src="http://41.media.tumblr.com/dbf51e9dfc56729ce546d995667e95ed/tumblr_inline_nqrc8yMGBX1s9nfjz_1280.jpg" data-orig-width="3804" height="235" style="border: 0px; display: block; margin: 5px auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: bottom;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i style="color: #313131; font-family: 'Myriad Pro'; font-size: medium; text-align: start;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: x-small;">A memorial for recently deceased mother “Mama Irene” (mother to Insomniac CEO and founder Pasquale Rotella) hangs against the walls of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The memorial is adorned in flowers, letters and kandi pieces as created and preserved by Ravers, otherwise known as Mama Irene’s “Paradise Kids.” Mama Irene attended many of Rotella’s events and could be seen dancing on stage most of the night; she was known for her warm and uplifting spirit, and friendly, positive demeanor.</span></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="color: #313131; font-family: 'Myriad Pro'; line-height: 33.3333358764648px; margin: 20px auto; padding: 0px;">
<span style="background-color: white;">For me, EDC is a “life-recharging station,” where community is embodied in its purest form, where individuality soars and we are free to embrace whatever feeling or thought we’d like and no one will judge you for it but rather rejoice in your confidence and spirit. It’s a place where love is cultivated and all hearts become one yet we are all free. Where stories are told through music and art, and where both stimulation and exploration occur vigorously, whether intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, or physically, or as a combination of all four. Where you have so much fun that your experience is transformed into goodness, and that goodness transcends the event and stays with you the remainder of the year. Where a hope for humanity is catalyzed because you understand, through this experience, what the world ought to look like. And somehow someway, you know you can help make it look a little bit better.</span></div>
<div style="color: #313131; font-family: 'Myriad Pro'; line-height: 33.3333358764648px; margin: 20px auto; padding: 0px;">
<span style="background-color: white;">An experience like EDC may feel like a temporary and fragmented time and space separate from the rest of reality, but the memories, the music, the energy, the potential for such goodness to be transformed and celebrated time after, remain long after the party is over. You can be sure that I’ll be back to recharge yet again. </span></div>

This past weekend, Give a Beat took to the north to partake in Detroit's famed Movement Festival. Amidst the air of music, dance, and camaraderie, our booth went about discovering how festival-goers felt about the power of electronic music to affect social change.<br />
<a name='more'></a>The end results were amazing.<br />
<br />
Volunteers brought back hundreds of our surveys, each with different answers and perspectives on the transforming effects of dance music on everyday lives. Among activists, beat-makers, and just plain-old fans, we found multitudes of individuals who felt, like us, that this genre of music fosters a welcoming community of inclusive, progressive thoughts & actions. <br />

"The music is meant to be heard in social gatherings, that are a release and a non-judgmental approach to unity that transcends socioeconomic status, race, religion, and generation."<br />

Well that was a big inspiration because my dad was in the most successful white
group at Motown records. It was really
exciting to be a part of a thousand screaming fans who wanted to meet my dad, and
it really inspired me to want to do something that makes people so happy! It just made everyone smile, and forget their
worries and dance and it just really hit home for me. It took a while though, because I was so
incredibly shy, as a little girl. I
didn’t want my mom to hold my hand in public.
I was just so embarrassed about everything. It wasn’t until I was like probably 25-26 to

So I quit my job in marketing because I was just in one of those horribly
boring (to me) jobs where you stare at your computer all day every day,
plugging in numbers, spreadsheets. And
all I would do was listen to music and dream about performing and singing and
writing songs. So I arranged for a
meditation retreat to go to. And when I
was at this retreat I had this awakening that what would make me happy was not
being in the corporate world. The more
you meditate, you know, the more you kind of connect with your higher power,
and I was doing a lot of writing exercises.
It was a long weekend called “embracing your shadow.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> It
was all about how when you’re young you start with this little satchel and
every year people do things to hurt your feelings, or something happens to you
that you don’t process emotionally, and the satchel gets bigger and bigger and
turns into a big heavy bag. So by the
time you’re in your 20s you have like a suitcase that you’re carrying. That suitcase represents your shadow. They really talked about how you feed your
shadow with fear, so your shadow gets bigger and bigger the more fearful you
are. The reason I was even in the
corporate marketing world was because I was so scared I wouldn’t make it as a
musician, so I just put all my energy into my backup plan, which was
marketing. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

I was very depressed at my job and what do most people do when they
have problems? Medicate. Our office even had a bar on site because
the VP wanted us to stay there! So I definitely didn't drink as much
after quitting, that for sure. Plus the ability to finally feel
as free as a butterfly to go and do whatever i wanted was the
happiest and most joyful time in my life. That's part of the reason I
named my album Joy Road.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> So when I went to this retreat and they were

where I was meditating a lot, I finally had this aha moment where I was like
“AHA! The reason I’m so depressed right
now,” (because I actually had an anxiety attack from stress at work) is because
I have no time for music.” So that was
my awakening, that I had no time for music because I was working at this job I
hated so I impulsively quit my job. I
had no money saved, I went on food stamps.
I was broke as a joke, and just put my heart and soul into writing and

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> A
big part of an artist like Beyoncé is that she could make one post about
helping to feed a foster care home that didn’t have food; that foster care home
would be rebuilt as a huge corporation with all the money that they made. I think that’s so important for artists to
use their skills that they have with social networking. They have to make a change. If they don’t I, I don’t necessarily look

I think if people can relate with someone else’s story and see that they’re not
alone and they can relate to that story or a song about an ex, or a
heartbreak. If they can grieve, or
express an emotion when listening to it, then they can actually get their fears
out, and I think that’s healing right there.
I mean, so many artists built their whole album on a heart-break, and
they become famous. And it’s because so

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">MG: It is hard, I’ve tried it. I’ve actually been taking a step back and
kind of observing on my own how other artists do with their songs, how they get
political. I don’t think that people
want to hear bad news at the end of the day.
If it’s about something more shallow (not that a heartbreak is shallow)
it becomes more appealing to listeners, since most don’t want to hear heavy,
heavy views. So it’s hard to get people
to listen to those things because everyone already has their own view on
it. Sometimes you actually lose fans
over being too political. If I’m
liberal, and I were to start posting about my beliefs, I would lose fans. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

One year of training, however, was insufficient to spark changes in the nervous system. <br /><br />“This research demonstrates that community music programs can literally ‘remodel’ children’s brains in a way that improves sound processing, which could lead to better learning and language skills,” said study lead author Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles professor of communication sciences in the School of Communication and of neurobiology and physiology in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern.<br /><br />“Music Enrichment Programs Improve the Neural Encoding of Speech in At-Risk Children,” published in The Journal of Neuroscience, is one of the few studies to evaluate biological changes following participation in an existing, successful music education program. <br /><br />Kraus, director of Northwestern’s <a href="http://www.brainvolts.northwestern.edu/">Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory</a>, and her team collaborated with<a href="http://www.harmony-project.org/">Harmony Project</a>. For more than a decade, Harmony Project has provided free music instruction to thousands of disadvantaged children from gang-reduction zones in Los Angeles. Children between the ages of 6 and 9 participated in the study. The research team traveled to Los Angeles to evaluate them as they enrolled in Harmony Project’s programs and returned each summer for the following two years to evaluate them longitudinally.<br /><br />“We used a quick but powerful neural probe that allowed us to gauge speech processing with unprecedented precision. With it, we found that the brain changes only followed two years of music training,” Kraus said. “These findings are a testament that it’s a mistake to think of music education as a quick fix, but that if it’s an ongoing part of children’s education, making music can have a profound and lifelong impact on listening and learning.”<br /><br />Research from around the world has suggested links between music training, enhanced brain function and heightened language skills. This is the first study, however, that uses random assignment to evaluate brain changes in collaboration with an existing and successful community music program that targets disadvantaged children. Prior research had focused on individuals from affluent homes who received private lessons.<br /><br />“Thanks to this finding, sustained music training is now an evidence-based method for closing the achievement gap between poor kids and their more advantaged peers,” said Margaret Martin, founder of Harmony Project. Martin approached Kraus several years ago, having observed the positive impact that music was having on Harmony kids’ lives. Since 2008, 93 percent of Harmony Project seniors have gone on to college despite dropout rates of 50 percent or more in their neighborhoods.<br /><br />“Now we know this success is rooted, at least in part, in the unique brain changes imparted by making music,” Martin added.<br /><br />“Biologically, you are what you do, and your past shapes your present,” Kraus said. “Community interventions have the potential to instill salient benefits in children that can set them up for better learning in and out of the classroom.”<br /><br />These findings provide biological backing for the large-scale implementation of these programs to promote child brain health and development.<br /><br />Kraus co-authored the study with Jessica Slater, Elaine C. Thompson, Dana L. Strait, Jane Hornickel, Trent Nicol and Travis White-Schwoch of Northwestern.<br /><br />For more about the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory’s research on music and learning-associated brain plasticity, visit <a href="http://www.brainvolts.northwestern.edu/">http://www.brainvolts.northwestern.edu</a>. TEXT VERSION</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Paxahau and Movement have been long-time supporters of the Give A Beat Foundation (the folks behind NextAid). Give A Beat launched a fundraising and awareness campaign during the 2014 festival called Music for Music in support of the creation of a Notes for Notes Music Studio at the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The auction kicked off on My 14th and ran through June 5th. It consisted of top music production gear from Movement partners like SubPac, Roland, Sennheiser and more, and collaborators like Groove Cruise, SoundCloud, Electric Forest Festival and more, plus Detroit-based donors like CAYA Bistro, React Presents, Starlily Creations and Cyboptix TieLab.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The $5,000 raised from the auction helped support the creation of the Notes for Notes Music Studio at the boys & Girls Club in Detroit. The music studio will be a hub where youth in the community, ages 6 and up, who are passionate about music can come together, regardless of their lives outside of those studio walls, with the resources and tools they need to thrive. It will be comprised of three rooms-jam, mix, and record-packed with guitars, drums, keys/synths, DJ and production equipment, digital music workstations, a vocal booth and more.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thanks to the Music for Music campaign, our collective support , and recent additional funding, Notes for Notes (N4N) has successfully raised a full $40,000 to earn the matching duns pledged by The Knight Foundation. They have reached their initial fundraising goal and will be able to begin building and equipping the music studio this fall.</div>

Carnegie Hall brings musical performances and workshops into
correctional facilities to contribute to inmates’ rehabilitation, preparing
them to return to life outside of prison. Carnegie Hall’s work at Sing Sing Correctional Facility
reaches 1,200 inmates and guards each year. Selected inmates participate in a yearlong composition

Give a Beat was founded on the belief that everyone deserves a second chance - love and forgiveness. This is why our initiatives are geared towards helping individuals and communities impacted by incarceration. In Baltimore, entrepreneur Chris Wilson is trying to make a difference by helping former inmates get jobs. His story is the perfect example of the need for - as well as the possibilities behind - second chances. <a href="http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/6/6/ex-con-businessmaninbaltimore.html">Read his story.</a></div>
